Ohio State and Penn State Honored with Field Hockey Awards

ROSEMONT, lll. – The Big Ten Conference has announced its Field Hockey Offensive, Defensive and Freshman of the Week Award winners for the season-opening weekend of Aug. 30-Sept. 2.

Offensive Player of the Week
Makenna Webster, Ohio State
Gr. – F – St. Louis, Mo. – Shattuck St. Mary’s

  • Recorded a conference-high 10 points on four goals and two assists in a pair of Buckeye victories in Columbus.
  • Notched her second career hat trick with a three-goal performance in Ohio State’s 6-1 win over 20th-ranked UAlbany
  • Factored in 60 percent of the team’s scoring as OSU experienced its high-scoring opening weekend in five seasons
  • Captures her second career weekly award, her first coming nearly a year ago to the day

Defensive Player of the Week
Abby Danson, Ohio State
Sr. – G – Clifton Park, N.Y. – Shenendehowa Central

  • Allowed just two goals in 116 minutes of action in victories over No. 20 UAlbany and Bucknell at Buckeye Varsity Field
  • Held Albany scoreless the last 54:15 minutes of the game and finished with four saves in the season opener
  • Stopped nine of 11 shots on goal for an .818 save percentage during the weekend
  • Secures the second Big Ten weekly honor of her career
  • Last Ohio State Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week: Abby Danson (Aug. 30, 2022)

Freshman of the Week
Aby Deverka, Penn State
Fr. – G – Houston, Texas – The Kinkaid School

  • A true freshman, Deverka kept her team close against two Top-10 teams, playing every minute in goal
  • Registered 11 saves on 13 shots versus third-ranked Virginia in a 2-1 setback on Aug. 30
  • Made three saves in an identical result against No. 10 Syracuse on Sept. 1, finishing the week with a 2.00 goals-against average
  • Becomes first Nittany Lion in four seasons to win the Big Ten Freshman Award
  • Last Penn State Big Ten Freshman Winner: Sophia Gladieux (April 19, 2021)
